Plato's Objections to Democracy
Political philosopher Dr. Melissa Lane commenting on Plato’s objections to democracy said:
“Fundamentally, his [i.e. Plato] objection to democracy was that it doesn’t have an objective standard of value. And it doesn’t require that people actually follow reason. Democracy leaves it open for people to vote on the basis of their passions, their fears, their irrational judgments. And for Plato, the most important thing was to be governed by reason and try to aim at what is genuinely good. Not just what happens to serve your own interests.”
