The Seerah, for some, has been effectively reduced to just another inspiring biography of a man whose personal sacrifices and courage we admire, yet essentially seek to flee from emulating through scriptural and juristic gymnastics in the name of “pragmatism.”
Biographies of such “pragmatists” are boring, dull, and uninspiring, which is why no famous and cherished figure in history, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, was ever a “pragmatist” who persistently and overwhelmingly compromised his values and principles.
Some honor and praise these famous and cherished historical figures due to the advantage of hindsight, yet, if they were their contemporaries, they would have been quick to rebuke them as reckless dreamers lacking 'pragmatic' foresight, and that is the bitter truth.
MB comes to mind.
