Examples of praiseworthy tolerance are:
- Tolerating kuffar holding their beliefs, despite knowing they are wrong. You do so because you respect that Allah سبحانه وتعالى has given them this right.
- Tolerating Muslims who hold valid beliefs contrary to yours, despite being confident that they are wrong. This is because you can appreciate the validity of their methods and reasoning even while disagreeing with their conclusions.
Examples of blameworthy tolerance are:
- Tolerating other views simply because you do not even care who is right or wrong. This could either be due to your lack of passion for the subject or because choosing to be intolerant would compromise another objective/agenda that you have.
- Tolerating other views out of ignorance. You have not done your homework properly on the subject, yet you tolerate controversial perspectives you are not even sure are valid. You would have been better off staying neutral and acknowledging that you are not prepared to hold an opinion on the matter just yet. It is technically ok to make taqleed of scholars whom you trust who do deem the opinion to be valid but do recognize that you are making taqleed and do not be too assertive in pushing your 'tolerant' stance unto others who are also following other respectable scholars who deem that opinion to be invalid. So this kind of tolerance is conditionally blameworthy, as it depends on how far you would go to push your stance unto others.
Another form of tolerance is liberal brainwashing to believe all ideas, even contradictory ones, are not only compatible, but ought to be celebrated.
