Sacrificing Personal Interests for the Public Interest
Ibn Taymiyyah said that if it were in the public interest that he goes to jail, then he would accept being imprisoned. ("أنا أمضي إلى الحبس وأتبع ما تقتضيه المصلحة"). ِThis is a great example of someone who prioritized communal and broader Islamic interests before his own. He did this because he was worried that the dispute at the highest levels of government pertaining to his fate might potentially cause strife.
As for most of us today, the required sacrifice is considerably less. Sometimes, brothers and sisters, all it takes is subduing our pride and ego just a little tiny bit for the sake of keeping the peace and love in the community. Let us not be selfish, and let us strive to prioritize the Ummah of Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) before our individual selves.
