When Appealing to Credentials Is Meaningless
It is my firm contention that many of these "popular speakers" who like to increase their fan base by holding "politically correct" views, while simultaneously like to flaunt their credentials that they studied under so and so shaykh and studied at this and that university, would not have the courage to face their teachers and tell them how much they have changed after having learned from them.
If Shaykh so and so knew what became of his student, he would give himself a facepalm and ask himself where he went wrong teaching his student.
If that respected Islamic university knew what became of one of its students, it would make sure to deny that their curriculum was responsible for it.
Hence, before defending a particular popular speaker by saying he studied here and there and with this and that scholar, ask yourself whether that popular speaker's views are even legitimate (not the same, but at the very least valid and legit) according to the standards of that institution and scholar.
If the answer is no, what great use is there in flaunting such credentials?
